The D.O. designation stands for Osteopathic Doctor
D.O. is short for Osteopathic Doctor. D.O.s receive their medical degrees from U.S. osteopathic schools. Unlike MDs, a D.O. is accredited by the American Osteopathic Associate Commission within the Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). The D.O. training is a more holistic approach to medicine and follows the philosophy called “osteopathic medicine.” D.O.s consider a patient’s environment nutrition, and body system as a whole when diagnosing and developing treatment plans for patients. Part of the certification requirement includes 200 hours of training in osteopathic manipulative medicine.
