1. What are neurotoxin injectables and how do they work?
Injectable neurotoxins – or wrinkle-relaxing botulinum toxin type A – are the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While collectively they are commonly called “Botox,” there are actually five different FDA-approved neurotoxins: BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and DAXXIFY. The newest entry in the neurotoxin market is DAXXIFY, which received FDA approval September 2022.
All neurotoxins are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. They can be used to treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and overactive bladders.
2. Which neurotoxin lasts the longest?
In general, BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin last three to four months, while the results of Jeuveau can last anywhere from five to six months. Certainly, there will be patients who see shorter- and longer-lasting results.
DAXXIFY, the newest of the five neurotoxins, boasts much greater staying power, with patients reporting results lasting as long as nine months.
3. What are DAXXIFY’s benefits?
Perhaps the greatest benefit of DAXXIFY is it saves the hassle of frequent trips to the office for touch-ups. With other injectables, it’s often necessary to schedule appointments three to four time a year to maintain results. With DAXXIFY, patients may only need to visit once or twice a year.
In addition, in one DAXXIFY study, 95.7% of participants reported being somewhat satisfied, satisfied, or very satisfied with their results after four weeks, with the highest number of participants describing themselves as very satisfied.

4. How does DAXXIFY compare to the leading neurotoxin, BOTOX Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic and other neurotoxins are made from what’s known as human serum albumin. According to an article in Self, DAXXIFY doesn’t contain any human or animal products and is instead made from peptides, which are short chains of compounds called amino acids. This makes DAXXIFY the only neuromodulator that’s free of human serum albumin or animal-based components.
It is the use of peptides that may help make DAXXIFY last longer as a wrinkle-smoother, but more research is needed to fully understand this.
5. Will DAXXIFY make me look older once it wears off?
There’s a common misconception that neurotoxins make you look older once they wear off. On the contrary, regular injections of neurotoxins – DAXXIFY included – make you look younger even after the product wears off.
6. How often will I need DAXXIFY injections?
In clinical studies of DAXXIFY, at least 50% of patients had no or mild frown lines for six months or longer, and 5% of patients had no or mild frown lines at nine months. For most patients, injections will need to be scheduled once or twice a year to maintain results.
7. How can I avoid the frozen look with neurotoxin injections?
The frozen look is often the result of an improperly placed injection, and the best way to avoid this unfortunate outcome is to make sure you’re seeing an experienced, trained injector. Make sure to pick someone who is medically qualified – such as the injectors at MetroDerm.
When an injection is placed correctly, the chances of side effects may be reduced.
