Basics of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are FDA-approved medical products used to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance to the skin and structures of the face. As we age, it is natural for our skin to start showing some changes as we lose some of the subcutaneous fat that supports our skin. Our skin also starts losing elasticity, allowing wrinkles to show on our faces. Injecting these fillers under the skin allows the lines and wrinkles to smooth out, while others can create structure on cheeks and chins. Dermal fillers are most often used on the nasolabial folds (the lines extending from the sides of the nose to the edges of the mouth), cheeks, chin, and lips. Fillers have also been FDA-approved for other body areas, including the tops of the hands and recessed scars.

One of the most popular types of injectable fillers is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the human body that plays a role in maintaining skin moisture and volume. Because HA is a naturally occurring component, the likelihood of adverse reactions to the filler is relatively low. The hyaluronic acid within these fillers binds to water molecules, generating a plumping effect that diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles while enhancing skin hydration. These fillers primarily function by replenishing lost volume, smoothing out fine lines, and augmenting facial contours. MetroDerm Center for Plastic Surgery carries a wide range of dermal fillers, including JUVÉDERM®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and Belotero®. Your Dermatology Provider will work with you to select a filler that will work best for you and your goals.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra is a brand name for an injectable cosmetic filler primarily used for facial rejuvenation and restoring lost volume. Unlike traditional fillers that work by immediately filling in wrinkles or lines, Sculptra’s main component is poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic material – the same material that has been widely used for more than 25 years in dissolvable stitches and other surgical products. Poly-L-lactic acid stimulates the body’s natural collagen production over time, leading to a gradual and natural-looking improvement in skin elasticity and volume. It is the first facial injectable that gives you subtle results over time.

It is commonly used to address signs of aging, such as sagging skin, facial hollows, deep lines, creases, and folds. Sculptra is a non-surgical option for individuals seeking a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Sculptra stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume lost to aging or illness.

What to Expect from Your Sculptra Treatment

Sculptra is administered in a series of treatment sessions. Each treatment takes around 30 minutes and involves using a very fine needle to inject the product directly into the lower layers of the skin. A topical or local anesthetic can be provided to minimize discomfort if needed.

The quantity of required injections varies based on several factors. Typically, three injection sessions are required within a span of a few months. It is crucial to adhere to the recommended treatment schedule to optimize the outcome of the gradual collagen replacement process.

After undergoing the treatments, anticipate a more youthful and natural-looking appearance that can last for up to two years. While Sculptra does not address the root cause of facial fat loss, it will help improve the appearance of your skin by augmenting thickness in the targeted region.

Immediately following a treatment session, patients may experience swelling, redness, pain, or bruising in the treatment area. These symptoms usually go away in a few hours to a few days. You may use an ice pack to help reduce common swelling. Patients should also avoid excessive sunlight. Make sure to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin.

The Science Behind HydraFacial

At its core, HydraFacial is a multi-step procedure designed to cleanse, exfoliate, extract impurities, and infuse the skin with nourishing serums. What sets HydraFacial apart is its use of a unique vortex suction technology that simultaneously removes dirt and debris from the pores while delivering hydrating and rejuvenating solutions. It’s a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that provides excellent results with zero downtime.

The treatment consists of several steps, each tailored to address specific skin care concerns:

Step 1. Cleansing and Exfoliation: The journey to healthy skin begins with a deep cleanse and gentle exfoliation. This step removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, revealing a fresh canvas for the subsequent phases.

Step 2. Extraction: The patented vortex suction technology is employed to painlessly remove blackheads, whiteheads, and other impurities from congested pores. This step contributes to improved skin texture and reduced pore size.

Step 3. Hydration: Once the skin is thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, nourishing serums are delivered to the skin. These serums help to hydrate, protect, and revitalize the skin, giving it a radiant and youthful appearance.

The Benefits of HydraFacial Treatments

HydraFacial is an excellent rejuvenating treatment for your skin. It has been shown to help with various skin issues, including fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, clogged pores, mild acne, and skin texture. Here are some benefits HydraFacial offers:

  1. Tailored to Individual Needs: HydraFacial is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. It can be customized to address specific concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or acne.
  2. Immediate Results: HydraFacial delivers instant gratification, unlike some treatments that require downtime. Patients often notice improved skin texture, reduced redness, and a healthy glow immediately after the treatment.
  3. Hydration Boost: Hydration is the cornerstone of healthy skin. Infusing hydrating serums during the treatment helps the skin retain moisture, leading to a plump and youthful appearance.
  4. Pore Refinement: HydraFacial effectively minimizes the appearance of pores through the extraction phase. This not only enhances the overall look of the skin but also prevents further buildup of impurities.
  5. Non-Invasive and Comfortable: The gentle and non-invasive nature of HydraFacial means that it’s well-tolerated by most individuals, even those with sensitive skin. No needles or harsh chemicals are involved, making it a relaxing experience.
