How Stress Impacts Your Skin: MetroDerm’s Dr. Corrie Alford Featured in HuffPost

A growing number of patients are asking whether stress could be behind their breakouts, dryness, thinning hair, or sudden inflammation. A recent HuffPost articleCould Stress Be Responsible For Your Bloating, Bad Skin, and Hair Loss? Doctors Weigh In – tackles this exact question. MetroDerm’s Dr. Corrie Alford, a Board-Certified Dermatologist at MetroDerm Atlanta–Sandy Springs and MetroDerm – Hiram, was featured to explain how stress impacts the skin at the biological level.

What Is Cortisol and Why Does It Matter for Skin Health?

Cortisol plays a central role in how the body responds to stress.

“It’s commonly known as ‘the stress hormone’ because our bodies produce extra cortisol to trigger the body’s fight-or-flight response when we are under acute stress,” Dr. Alford explained in the article. During this surge, “cortisol increases blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension,” preparing the body to respond quickly.

Beyond its role in stress, cortisol helps keep the body functioning properly. Dr. Alford noted that cortisol is “critical for maintaining appropriate organ function and regulating blood pressure, glucose levels, immune response, and the sleep-wake cycle.”

When cortisol rises only occasionally, the body adapts well. But when stress becomes frequent, cortisol levels spike more often than they should. “During short periods of high stress or trauma, cortisol levels increase rapidly,” she said, and that is when skin changes begin to show.

How Does Excess Cortisol Affect Your Skin?

Cortisol directly influences how the skin repairs itself. One of its most significant effects is on collagen and elastin production, the supportive proteins that keep skin smooth and firm.

“Excess cortisol reduces the production of the skin’s building blocks, collagen and elastin,” Dr. Alford explained. “As their production slows, the skin becomes thinner and more prone to premature wrinkles and stretch marks.”

These hormonal shifts also disrupt oil production. According to Dr. Alford, “too much cortisol can also lead to altered oil production, resulting in acne, dry skin, or both.” This explains why many people notice breakouts during busy seasons or experience dryness and irritation when stress levels peak.
