Dr. Corrie Alford Featured in Parents: Understanding Postpartum Skin Pigmentation

Dr. Corrie Alford, MD, a Board-Certified Dermatologist at our MetroDerm Atlanta – Sandy Springs and MetroDerm – Hiram locations, was recently featured in Parents in the article “A Starter Guide to Postpartum Skin Pigmentation, According to Dermatologists.” In the feature, Dr. Alford explains why pigmentation changes are common during and after pregnancy and shares safe, Dermatologist-recommended strategies for prevention and care.

During pregnancy, hormonal shifts – particularly increases in estrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone – can trigger excess melanin production. This often leads to common pigmentation concerns such as:

  1. Melasma – Melasma is a common pigmentation condition characterized by brown or gray-brown patches on the face, sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy”
  2. Darkening of the nipples or areolas
  3. Linea nigra on the abdomen – dark vertical line running from the navel to the pubic area
  4. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that may develop after acne, eczema, or other inflammatory skin conditions.

Sun exposure and visible light can further stimulate pigment-producing cells, making discoloration more noticeable and persistent.

According to Dr. Alford, prevention is key. “Pigmentation during and after pregnancy is best addressed by taking preventive measures,” she says. “Limiting significant sun exposure and using a sunscreen that contains an SPF 30 or greater and offers UVA and UVB protection is key.

She also notes that blue light exposure, such as from phones and computer screens, can contribute to pigmentation. “Tinted sunscreen is also recommended for people who spend significant time in front of computer screens,” says Dr. Alford. “Blue light exposure can play a role in hyperpigmentation, primarily in skin of color.

For treatment support, she adds that “over-the-counter products containing vitamin C serums, azelaic acid, or niacinamide (vitamin B3) may help address pigmentation.

Safety remains essential during pregnancy and breastfeeding. “Prescription pigmentation-fading ingredients, such as hydroquinone, are not recommended during pregnancy or nursing,” Dr. Alford cautions.

She also advises proactive Dermatologic care for patients with inflammatory conditions. “If you have an inflammatory skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, see a Dermatologist during pregnancy,” she says. “The right treatment can help reduce the risk and severity of hyperpigmentation that can appear post-pregnancy.

Dr. Alford’s expert insights in Parents reinforce the importance of personalized, pregnancy-safe Dermatologic care for long-term skin health, reflecting MetroDerm’s commitment to putting patients’ skin health, safety, and well-being first at every stage of life.
